Burnaby Dentists provide insight into the Invisalign® teeth straightening treatment.
Whether you would like to have a beautiful smile for aesthetic reasons or to help with the ease of being able to keep teeth healthy and clean, having straight teeth is a desirable trait.
If you are a child or an adult, having crooked teeth is something that can make you feel self-conscious. Crooked teeth may prevent you from giving a full smile, laughing out loud or feeling uncomfortable about showing your teeth in public. Having crooked teeth can also affect your oral health as they are harder to keep clean which can lead to cavities and periodontal disease.
For most of us, we were not born with a perfectly straight set of pearly whites. There are often issues with our teeth of crowding, spacing, crossbite, overbite or underbite. The good news however, is that crooked teeth do not need to be permanent.
When it comes to how teeth are straightened, most likely metal braces comes to mind. With many advances in technology and procedures there is an alternative to metal braces which makes the process of straightening teeth convenient and nearly invisible with Invisalign®.
Invisalign® is an orthodontic treatment used to straighten crooked teeth. It’s makes the treatment of straightening teeth nearly unnoticeable due to clear materials used to create braces called aligners.
How Exactly Does Invisalign® Work?
Once you have selected a Burnaby Invisalign® certified Dentist, your first treatment begins with a consultation to discuss your needs and to determine if you are a good candidate for Invisalign®.
If your goal of the treatment is to fix any of the following, Invisalign® might be ideal for you.
- Fixing an overbite/deep bite
- Fixing an overjet issue
- Fixing an underbite
- Fixing a spacing issue.
- Fixing an open bite
- Fixing a crowding issue.
- Fixing a crossbite issue.
- Generally straighter teeth.
During your consultation you will also be able to ask questions about the procedure, results you can expect, pricing, oral hygiene care or any other questions.
In the meantime, if you are curious to find out if you are a good candidate for Invisalign® have a look at the the Invisalign® Smile Assessment.
Next, your dentist will take x-rays, pictures and impressions of your teeth from which they will create a treatment plan and a series of custom, invisible clear plastic aligners. The aligners will be worn over your teeth which will gradually work to change the position of your teeth and gently align the crooked ones. The aligners are made from a smooth, comfortable, BPA-free plastic so they will not irritate your cheeks and gums.
Approximately every two weeks, depending on your treatment plan and your dentist’s prognosis, a new set of aligners will be worn to replace the previous one to advance your teeth to the next stage of treatment. To keep your treatment on track, it is recommended that the aligners are worn for 20 to 22 hours each day. This process will continue until the treatment is complete which typically ranges from 12-18 months. Throughout the process you will have monitoring appointments every 2-6 weeks depending on your treatment.
What are the Benefits of Invisalign®?
Below are some benefits you can expect from using this orthodontic treatment:
Straighten Teeth Comfortably
Invisalign® aligners are smooth and comfortable so they can be worn all day. Unlike metal braces, there are no wires, sharp edges or brackets which can cause discomfort by digging into your gums, lips and cheeks.
Invisible and Removable
Invisalign® aligners are barely noticeable. They look very much as though the person wearing them is not wearing braces at all. This is especially desirable if you are uncomfortable and concerned about people noticing your braces while in social settings.
Continue With Your Regular Oral Hygiene Routine
Since Invisalign® aligners aren’t permanently attached to your teeth you can remove them as needed. This means you can continue with your regular oral hygiene routine of flossing and brushing to keep your teeth and gums healthy with ease.
No Restrictions With Food
With metal braces, you are required to stay away from certain foods that might damage the braces or get stuck in them. Food stuck in metal braces can be difficult to remove. Your brushing and flossing routine will also need to increase in time as you must be meticulous about cleaning your teeth and braces to keep a healthy mouth and avoid stained teeth.
Know The Final Results
With Invisalign® you will know exactly what the end result will be. If your treatments are followed as your dentist recommends, the final results of your treatment will be exactly as your dentist showed and explained during your consultation.
