If you notice thin vertical lines in the front of your teeth, most likely these are craze lines.
Craze lines are visible cracks in the enamel of the teeth and develop over time from years of using our teeth. The cracks are normally painless but can sometimes cause embarrassment as the lines tend to stain easily.
Causes of Craze Lines
Craze lines can be caused by repeated stress placed on a tooth. Over years of use from biting, chewing or grinding, our teeth tend to develop tiny cracks in the enamel. Craze lines may also develop from extreme temperature changes from hot to cold on our teeth. For example, it is not recommended to chew on a piece of ice after drinking a hot beverage.
Another factor that can contribute to craze lines is aging. Just as our bodies age, our teeth age as well and tend to become more brittle and susceptible to craze lines and cracking as we grow older.
Treatment for Craze Lines
Taking care to avoid biting on your fingernails, grinding your teeth, using your teeth as tools and avoiding extreme temperature changes on your teeth may help prevent craze lines. There is no treatment necessary for craze lines as these cracks do not penetrate into the dentin layer of the tooth. There is also not a dental treatment to prevent craze lines.
If you do have craze lines in areas of high impact then your Dentist may monitor the situation and offer suggestions for restoration if cracking and further damage is being done to the tooth.
There are treatments if there are aesthetic concerns. Craze lines tend to stain easily and make the teeth look striped.
To diminish these stains, the Dentists at North Burnaby Dental Group will provide a personal approach to restoring the area or removing surface stains where possible.
For extreme cases, if your craze lines are extreme, other options such as veneers or tooth coloured fillings can be discussed.
